In Rwanda, where people with disabilities constitute 5% of the population and often face financial hardships, a collaborative effort between the Scottish Government and NUDOR is bringing about significant change. This initiative aims to empower individuals with disabilities by providing access to financial resources and training, ultimately paving the way towards financial independence and economic stability.

Through the partnership, individuals with disabilities are being enabled to access small loans and support through village savings schemes. Moreover, Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLA) are being established and supported, offering a platform for small groups to save collectively and obtain loans for entrepreneurial ventures or income-generating activities.

Crucially, participants in the program are also receiving training in financial management, entrepreneurship, improved farming techniques, climate resilience, rainwater harvesting, and solar energy utilization. This comprehensive approach equips individuals with the skills and knowledge necessary to thrive in various economic endeavors.

The project's scope extends across four districts in Rwanda – Nyanza, Ruhango, Rutsiro, and Rusizi – with the goal of benefiting 14,000 people with disabilities. By fostering sustainable employment opportunities and imparting valuable skills, the initiative aims to make a lasting impact on the lives of participants, enabling them to achieve self-sufficiency and economic stability.

Funded by the Scottish Government's International Development Fund, this program exemplifies the power of international cooperation in addressing socio-economic disparities and promoting inclusivity. By empowering individuals with disabilities to participate fully in economic activities, Rwanda moves closer to achieving its goal of building a more equitable and prosperous society for all.
