The University of Rwanda's Students Support Centre has launched a pilot training program to enhance inclusivity and address disability in higher education, as part of the ANSWER project’s institutional development efforts. Held over two days at the UR Head Office and themed "Equal Opportunities in Higher Education: Dealing with Inclusion and Disability", the program involved faculty from the College of Education’s School of Inclusive and Special Needs Education, alongside academic staff and advocates, to foster an inclusive academic environment.
Sessions began with Jean Bosco Nshimiyimana addressing misconceptions about disability, encouraging empathy and understanding. Pierre Barayagwiza facilitated a participatory discussion on biases and the societal barriers faced by individuals with disabilities, highlighting how positive attitudes among staff can improve accessibility and support.
The second day focused on practical disability rights and theoretical frameworks, with Barayagwiza and Emanuel Mbelimana exploring legal rights and their application within academic settings. Additional sessions on the social vs. medical models of disability and empathy training underscored the shift toward viewing disability through a social lens.
This pilot marks a significant step forward, equipping university staff to support students with disabilities and promote an inclusive learning environment.
The ANSWER project sincerely thanks our knowledgeable speakers and engaged participants for making this event on disability inclusion in higher education institutions a reality. Your expertise and commitment have been essential in driving our mission forward: promoting the inclusion of students with disabilities in higher education in Rwanda.
