The East African University Rwanda’s Students Support Centre delivered also a pilot training programme entitled “Disability and promotion of inclusion in higher learning institutions in Rwanda”. It took place on 10-11 October 2024 in Nyagatare and had the following objectives:

  1. To promote active collaboration and networking between policymakers, education personnel, NGOs, private sector and relevant stakeholders.
  2. To engage relevant stakeholders to participate in the multi-stakeholder working groups to be created in the framework of the ANSWER project.
  3. To present the ANSWER project "Advance Inclusion for Students with Disabilities on Higher Education in Rwanda", expected results and consortium.
  4. To foster a discussion on current status on inclusion at Higher Education in Rwanda and recommendations via the implementation of a Round Table.

This included adopting new teaching methodologies, improving campus infrastructure, and utilizing assistive technologies to enhance learning experiences.

The training was attended by a total of 66 people, among which there were key stakeholders, including Regional Representative of World vision, Representative of Director of Education –Nyagatare District, NCPD Committee, NUDOR Representative, Representatives of HVP Gatagara-Rwamagana (Home de la Vierge des Pauvres),  Representatives of GS Rwisirabo all  actively working with people with disabilities and schools dedicated to supporting and educating children with disabilities, especially those with physical impairments. Additionally, participants included, East African University Rwanda Staff (academic and administrative staff) and students’ representatives with and without disabilities.

The training at East African University was a crucial step towards fostering an inclusive educational environment for students with disabilities. The insights and strategies shared during the event will empower educators to create more supportive learning spaces, ultimately benefiting all students. The university looks forward to hosting similar initiatives in the future to continue this important conversation and drive change in educational practices.

From the ANSWER team, we would like to congratulate EAUR for all the effort, dedication and care they have put into organizing this event and for the very positive results they have obtained. Without a doubt, the event has allowed us to promote the inclusion of students with disabilities in higher education in Rwanda. See you at the next training!
