In 2021, Rwanda marked the International Day of Persons with Disabilities with a week-long campaign aimed at empowering youth and women with disabilities, particularly in the area of sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR). Organized by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and supported by the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), the initiative provided menstrual health products to the Rwanda National Association of Deaf Women (RNADW) and engaged adolescents, youth with disabilities, parents, and community leaders in Nyamasheke District.
The campaign included discussions on SRHR, access to youth-friendly services, and community awareness-raising. It highlighted the need for greater inclusion and support for persons with disabilities in a post-COVID-19 world, promoting their leadership and participation. The initiative was part of the broader "Healthy & Empowered Youth Project," which seeks to equip vulnerable young people with knowledge and services to exercise their rights to equality, health, and freedom from violence.
Key leaders, including UNFPA Rwanda's Representative Kwabena Asante-Ntiamoah and RNADW President Muhorakeye Pelagie, emphasized the importance of empowering young people and ensuring their dignity, health, and participation in society.
