On April 30, 2024, the National Union of Disability Organisations in Rwanda (NUDOR) hosted a meeting in Kigali to strengthen collaboration between humanitarian actors and organizations of persons with disabilities (OPDs) in Rwanda. The event brought together government ministries, development partners, civil society organizations, and humanitarian groups to discuss inclusive support for persons with disabilities during emergencies.

Dr. Beth Nasiforo Mukarwego, NUDOR’s Chairperson, emphasized the need for mechanisms that ensure the inclusion of persons with disabilities in emergency situations. Mr. ACP Egide Mugwiza from the Ministry of Emergency Management (MINEMA) underscored the challenges that persons with disabilities face during crises and highlighted the ministry’s commitment to providing inclusive, life-saving services. He also acknowledged the potential of persons with disabilities to contribute to emergency response efforts.

Moreover, NUDOR’s Executive Secretary, Jean Damascene Nsengiyumva, shared the organization’s work on disability and climate change, including assessments and advocacy for inclusive interventions. The meeting, supported by the Finnish Evangelical Lutheran Mission (FELM), aimed to improve resilience for women and girls with disabilities and align with the Sustainable Development Goals to “leave no one behind”.
