On June 19, 2024, INES-Ruhengeri held an awareness session on disability, accessibility, and inclusion, organized by the INES Student Support Centre as part of its ANSWER Project. The session, led by Bahati Satir Omar, Executive Director of UWEZO Youth Empowerment, aimed to educate students and staff on the barriers faced by people with disabilities and promote inclusivity within the institution.
The event focused on dismantling common misconceptions about disability and highlighting the importance of creating an environment that is accessible for everyone. Bahati emphasized the need for empathy and understanding, encouraging participants to recognize how physical, social, and institutional barriers can limit the participation of disabled individuals in academic and social activities. The session also underscored the necessity of universal access and the commitment to disability rights as outlined in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
Through these discussions, INES-Ruhengeri reaffirmed its commitment to fostering an inclusive campus that embraces diversity and provides equal opportunities for all students, regardless of their physical abilities. The awareness session is part of a broader initiative to ensure that individuals with disabilities are fully integrated into the academic community, furthering the institution's mission to be a model of inclusivity and social responsibility.
