During the election for the parliamentary representative of persons with disabilities in Rwanda, on July 16, members of the National Council of Persons with Disabilities (NCPD), partner of the ANSWER consortium, called for more affordable prosthetic devices. Voters expressed concerns over the high cost of prostheses, which range from $468 to $936, and are not covered by the community-based health insurance (Mutuelle de Santé). The government has acknowledged the need for an additional Rwf7.5 billion in funding to adequately support people with disabilities in accessing prosthetic and orthotic devices.
Voters hope the newly elected representative will advocate for better access to these essential medical devices.
